Commissioning a bespoke seascape painting is a beautiful way to capture a special coastal memory and bring the beauty of the ocean into your home. As a Cornwall-based seascape artist, I specialise in creating custom hand-painted seascape paintings that capture the colour, movement, and atmosphere of the sea in a meaningful and personal way.

Whether it’s a favourite stretch of coastline, a beach that evokes happy memories, or simply a coastal scene that captures a mood you love, a bespoke seascape commission allows you to transform that place or moment into a unique piece of original art. Each painting reflects the light, movement, and energy of the coast — from sparkling turquoise waves and sunlit waters to dramatic rolling swells or peaceful shoreline scenes.

From the first conversation to the completed artwork, you are part of the creative process, helping to design a painting that perfectly reflects your vision and evokes the mood and emotion you wish to capture.

How To Commission Your Seascape Painting

Your Vision

The first step in creating your custom seascape painting is simply to get in touch and tell me a little about what you have in mind.

You might already have a specific location or scene you’d like me to paint — perhaps a favourite beach in Cornwall, a memorable holiday destination, or a view from the shoreline that means a lot to you.

Alternatively, you might simply love the ocean and would like a painting that captures a particular mood, such as calm reflective waters, sunlight shimmering across the sea, or the drama of powerful breaking waves.

If you’re unsure exactly what you’d like, that’s absolutely fine. I can share ideas and examples to help us shape the perfect composition together.

Choosing the Right Size

Your seascape commission can be created in a range of sizes. Let me know what sort of size you have in mind for your space, and I can advise on the options.

Larger paintings often work beautifully for dramatic ocean scenes or wide coastal views where the movement of the waves and the detail of the water can really come to life.

Smaller sizes can work wonderfully for more intimate shoreline scenes or gentle wave studies.

If you’re unsure which size would work best for your space, I’m always happy to offer advice to help you choose the perfect option.

Securing Your Commission

Once we’ve discussed the details of your bespoke seascape painting, a 50% deposit secures your place in my schedule.

As I work on a limited number of commissions at a time, I often book several months in advance. If you have a specific deadline — perhaps for a special gift or occasion — it’s always best to get in touch as early as possible.

Designing Your Seascape Painting

Once your commission is booked, I begin designing the composition for your painting.

This may involve gathering reference photos, studying the movement of the sea, and exploring different composition ideas so that we can create a painting that truly captures the atmosphere of your chosen scene.

I’ll share these ideas with you so that together we can refine the composition until we have a design that perfectly reflects your vision. You may also wish to view my seascape painting gallery for inspiration.

Creating Your Bespoke Seascape Painting

Once the composition is finalised, I begin painting your seascape using oil paints, carefully building up layers of colour, light and texture.

Capturing the movement of the ocean is a gradual process, with each layer helping to create depth and realism in the water. From the glow of turquoise waves to the subtle reflections and foam patterns on the surface of the sea, every detail is developed carefully to bring the scene to life.

As I work, I often photograph and film the painting process to share later on my social media, so that you can enjoy seeing your seascape commission gradually come together.

If your painting is intended as a surprise gift, I’ll of course keep everything private until after the artwork has been revealed.

Completion

When your painting is complete, I’ll send you a proof image so you can review the finished artwork.

If there are any small adjustments you’d like made, this is the perfect time to request them. Once you’re completely happy with your painting, the final balance will be due.

Framing Your Seascape Painting

Your seascape painting commission can be supplied either framed or unframed, depending on your preference. Some clients like to arrange the framing locally themselves, while others prefer to receive the artwork ready to hang. Whatever your preference, just let me know.

I’m always happy to offer advice on framing styles to help you present your painting beautifully in your home.

Delivery

You don’t need to be based in the UK to commission a painting. Although I’m based in Cornwall, I regularly ship artwork to collectors both across the UK and internationally. Each painting is carefully packaged to ensure it arrives in perfect condition. If you’re located outside the UK, I’ll be happy to arrange international shipping for your seascape painting commission.

If you'd like to collect your painting yourself, then I'd be delighted to welcome you at my art studio and present your bespoke artwork to you in person. I'm located near Newquay in Cornwall, UK.

Commission Your Own Seascape Painting

If you’d love to commission your own bespoke seascape painting, or simply want to discuss an idea, please get in touch.

I’m always happy to chat through ideas and help you create a painting that captures a place, memory or moment by the sea that is special to you.

You can also view my available seascape paintings or explore my collection of limited edition seascape prints for inspiration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a seascape commission take?

Most commissions take several weeks to a few months, depending on the size and complexity of the painting. Booking early is recommended, especially if you have a specific deadline.

Do you work from photos?

Yes - before starting any painting, I gather a selection of reference photos to help create the composition for your artwork. If you have photos you’d like to provide, that’s perfect. Together, we’ll use the images to discuss ideas, inform the direction of the painting, and capture the atmosphere and mood you’d like the finished piece to convey.

Can I get my painting framed?

Your seascape can be supplied either framed or unframed, depending on your preference. I’m happy to offer advice on framing options if needed. Alternatively, if you’d like a deep-edge canvas with the painting wrapped around the sides so that no framing is required, I can do that for you. Just let me know your preference.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes - I ship seascape paintings both across the UK and internationally. Each painting is carefully packaged to ensure it arrives safely.

How much does a bespoke seascape commission cost?

The price depends on the size and complexity of the painting. Once you share your ideas, I’ll provide a clear quote and advise on the different options available.
