This drawing of a mother orangutan tenderly cradling her infant displays the pure love that is felt between a mother and her baby. I wanted this piece to communicate that raw emotion of love.
It’s hard not to see ourselves reflected in some way when you look into the eyes of an orangutan. You feel their soul, their thoughts, their emotions being radiated through those deep dark eyes that feel so human. It’s not surprising to learn that we share over 96.4% of our DNA with them.
One of the huge similarities we share with orangutans is the long and intensive mother-baby relationship. A baby orangutan will be completely dependent on its mother for the first ten years of its life. In fact, they take the longest time of any mammal on earth to grow up! Orangutan infants are carried by their mother until around 5 years of age, and they feed on their mother’s milk until the age of 8. There’s so much knowledge and skill that an infant has to learn from its mother during this long childhood period. It's no wonder that they form such a close attachment and emotional bond.
Once an orangutan reaches ten years of age, they have all the life skills necessary to leave home. While the male offspring will move onto pastures new and find their own territory, female orangutans like to stick around close to mum. For the next 5 to 6 years during their adolescent years, females will regularly pop in to visit their mothers and have a good ol’ catch up!
